Fall Camp Review: Day 2
So I was lucky enough to watch about 45 minutes of practice on Thursday. It had been awhile since I watched an extended portion of live practice so it was great to be back. I only have a few thoughts on the day but wanted to share them quickly.
1. Camp/Practice is intense. There were really no breaks and players were rarely stationary. They ran from spot to spot and if they didn't hustle, were told to start again. It was also hot down on the field even though it was only 80 degrees out.
2. These early practices are all about details. Most of the players have made plenty of tackles both in their prep and collegiate careers so it was interesting to watch the tackling progression drills that Coach Brown led the defense through. Not exciting stuff, but definitely important.
4. During the aforementioned one-on-one pass rush drills, Jacob Ohnesorge showed why he has appeared on national All-American lists. The senior center stonewalled good efforts from his opponents every time it was his turn.
5. The competition between the pass catchers versus the secondary is going to be fierce. The Jacks have tons of fire power on offense but there are unknowns surrounding the young secondary players. Battling against high quality pass catchers during practice will only make the Jackrabbit secondary stronger. If Thursday is any indication, they are up for the challenge and won't back down.
6. During the 7 on 7 portion, Jordan Brown made a phenomenal interception on the first play of the period. The Jacks will need him to make those type of plays on a routine basis this year.
7. The 2017 recruiting class was highly touted so it is fun to watch them figure everything out. I watched the veterans coach up these younger players and get them up to speed as quickly as possible.
I'll try to bring you updates from camp periodically this fall.
Go Jacks!

3. Similarly, the amount of technique that was drilled home during one-on-one pass rush drills between the offensive and defensive line was fun to watch. Coach Eck, Coach Smith, and Coach Brown really have the technique down to an exact science and they were working their players hard to get the details right.Tackling progressions.
