Fall Camp Review: Practice #16

It is hard to believe that the Jacks are already 16 practices in with only 17 days to go until the first game.  Saturday's practice was a controlled scrimmage and officials were present and were calling penalties.  The energy started off a little low, but a couple of big hits in and things pumped up.

Here are a few thoughts.

1.  The running backs had a nice day.  Isaac Wallace kicked it off with a nice 30 yard run down the left side that reminded me of the long runs that we have seen from him the last few years.   Next up to bust a long run were Blair Mulholland and then CJ Roth over the right side.  After that Brady Mengarelli had a nice run up the middle/  The day was capped off by a bruising run from Mikey Daniel.  A lot of the credit for these long runs goes to the offensive line but there were also negative runs throughout the scrimmage.  The backs showed good patience and vision on their runs.

2.  Dallas Goedert is such a tough cover with his size and athleticism.  He just finds space  He had a pair of impressive catches over the middle early in practice including a nice sliding catch for a first down down the right seem.

3.  Second team linebackers were Seven Wilson, Dalton Cox, and Noah Urbanek.  All three made plays but it was a hit by Cox that got everyone's attention.  Jack's fans have seen this intensity and pop on special teams the last few years but it was fun to watch the hard hit on an inside run that stopped the running back in his tracks.  On the same drive as Cox's big hit, Urbanek did well to sniff out a screen which forced the offense into 4th down.

4.  The second team offensive line was young.  From left to right it was Evan Greeneway, Matt Clark, Jack Domandle,  Eddie Miller, and Eagan Lickiss.

5.  An early emphasis for the defense this year has been getting off the field on 3rd down.  It was a mixed bag on Saturday.  The offense converted a third and long right at the sticks.  It was questionable whether or not the receiver had the 1st down but the referee gave it to the offense. However, no harm was done as they forced another third down and the field goal attempt was no good.

6.  One theme that stuck out on the day was the pass rush that the defensive line applied throughout the practice.  It started on the inside with Kellen Soulek and Spencer Hildahl collapsing the pocket.  Then Tolu Ogunrinde and Tristen Leiseth had their turn from around the edge.  Others who added to the pressure were Austin Smenda, Ryan Earith, Krockett Krolikowski, Thomas Stacker, Daniel Callender, and Xavier Ward.  It was a nice day for the pass rush of the defensive line.

7.  One thing that has stood out to me through camp is the play of Jordan Brown.  I didn't include him on my "breakout" list because I think he is already there.  In practice, he battles Jake Wieneke nearly every practice and does a solid job.  Saturday he seemed to really show out.  Having a couple passes defended including a beautiful leaping breakup over the right side.  Him and Washington form a solid pair on the outside.

8. I noticed #33 Thomas Hopp has been moved back to linebacker from running back.  There have been a few injuries in camp that have decreased the numbers of available linebackers.  When I talked to Coach Johson, the running backs coach, before the season he called Hopp a "head buster" because of his love for hitting.

9.  On kick return, the returners were Cade Johnson and Jacob Brown.  The second level was Luke Sellers, Kane Louscher, and Thomas Hopp.

10.  On kick off  the referees had an impact.  I think all three units had an offside penalty, jumping across the line just before the ball was kicked.  The coaches were really stressing timing and getting it right so there wasn't a penalty.

11.  In the two minutes offense, the defense and offense each traded blows.  Vinatieri did make four field goals but the highlight of the two minute period was a nasty staff arm delivered on an inside run by Mengarelli that sprung him for a touchdown.  The cheers by the offense and the groans by the defense let everyone know it was a big play.  Cade Johnson and Marquise Lewis also had a few nice catch and runs that were good for first downs.  The two minute warning showed how big of a difference Callender and Ogunrinde can be in pass rush situations.  The combination of speed and power was fun to watch on Saturday and will be something to look for on the 31st.

12.  It was great to see so many of the freshmen out there for the first time in game action.  There were mistakes made but they are learning and trying to play at a faster speed than high school.  So far this class is living up to the expectations.

Go Jacks!
