Fall Camp Review: Practice #17

Monday's practice was a return to earlier practices in camp. The team drilled in their position groups virtual the entire practice before coming together for some 7 vs 7 and lineman battles.  The energy was pretty good but you can tell the players are itching for some more live action against a different opponent.

Here are a few notes and thoughts.

1.  One thing that I had doubted from my notes from Saturday's scrimmage was the emergence of true freshman safety, Jordan Velez.  On Saturday, I quickly scribbled down the numbers of both the number one kick-off and kick-return units and said that I would look up the names for the numbers I didn't recognize later.  When I got home, I saw #27 listed on both units and thought "that can't be right."  I asked Coach Bergstrom at practice on Monday and he confirmed that Jordan is indeed on the number one unit of both.  Bergstrom had told me to keep an eye out for Velez when I interviewed him about the position group earlier this summer.  His emergence as a true freshman confirms that.  Velez running with the 1's means that the Jacks will likely play multiple freshmen.  Eddie Miller, Eagen Lickiss, Seven Wilson, Noah Urbanek, Jack Domandle, and Daniel Callender are likely candidates to play early or were on the second string units of the scrimmage on Saturday.

2.  The Green Bay Packers had a scout present at practice.

3. The footwork drills that Coach Eidsness runs the quarterbacks through are so detailed.  It has to be frustrating and I know if I tried them, I would be kicking cones all over the field.

4.  The Jacks ran through weird special teams scenarios on kickoff and kick return.  Again, this level of detail and practice is under appreciated by the fans but gives me peace of mind knowing the team practiced it in case they ever face that scenario.

5. On kickoff are Lance Eide, Seven Wilson, Zy Mosley, Noah Urbanek, Thomas Hopp, Jordan Velez, Dalton Cox, Jordan Brown, Alex Romenesko, and Donald Gardner.

6. The defensive tackles were working through drills that required them to have "violent hands", grab, and rip.  There was one rep where Kellen Soulek threw his teammate into a blocking sled that was five yards away.  It was an impressive display of strength and power.

7.  It's interesting that GoJacks profiled the safety group yesterday because I noticed just how deep they are at the position.  Any of the group could contribute this year.  They are consistent from practice to practice.

8.  The offense worked on a variety of screens in practice with the coaches and GA's holding dummies.  The level of timing this requires is something I didn't fully appreciate before hand.  There are certainly lots of moving parts.

9.  "Catch of The Day" goes to Christian Rozeboom who snagged an interception on an out route and would have taken it for a pick-6 in a game scenario.  It was reminiscent of the plays that Derek Domino used to make.

10. Bad news to report.  Kyle Tuttle will miss season with a knee injury that he suffered earlier in camp.  Tuttle had a great spring and summer and was competing for a starting outside linebacker spot.  Good luck on your recovery, Kyle.

Go Jacks!
