Position Preview: Offensive LIne

This the fifth installment of our offensive position preview.  So far we have covered the quarterbacks, tight ends, running backs, and wide receivers.  Today we will look at the offensive line.

The #605 Hogs are back and ready for business.  Coach Jason Eck returns for his second season with the Jacks and is ready to help this group take the next step.  Last year, Eck brought the idea that the line needed to be more physical and that the team would only go as far as the line would take it.  He said that the idea for this year is still the same.  The line needs to continue to be physical and dominate the line of scrimmage. They need to be able to block and get the short yards when needed and they need to withstand the pass rush and hold up when long yardage is the goal.  The line has not been determined yet and jobs will be won in camp.  Young players will need to continue to develop so that there is greater depth at all positions.  Eck shared that consistency from snap to snap and game to game is key.

#62 Jacob Ohnesorge is back for his senior season at center and will serve as a team captain for the third time.  Eck stressed how good of a leader and blocker Ohnesorge has been in his time with the Jacks.  Ohnesorge has been recognized for his play on a handful of preseason All-American lists and was on the preseason All-MVFC team.

#68 Charlie Harmon returns as a two year starter at left tackle and is incredibly underrated.  Although his efforts were recognized with a spot on the preseason All-MVFC team.  Harmon was an anchor on the left side and shut down high caliber players on a weekly basis.  Eck thinks Harmon can still improve and be even better in 2017.  Look for another big jump from Harmon this season.

#77 Wes Genant surprised Jackrabbit fans by excelling as a super-sub right tackle as a true freshman. In spring ball he played both at right guard and right tackle but this fall most of his snaps have come at right guard.  Eck credits Genant's intelligence for his ability to quickly get on the field as a true freshman.  He also has really good position flexability because of this intelligence in addition to his athleticism.

#51 Tiano Pupungato enters has junior year looking to build upon a solid sophomore season following a position change from defensive tackle to left guard.  He made big strides as the year went along and now needs to improve his consistency from week to week.  Tiano is a really physical player who can move really well.

#70 Tyler Weir is now a junior and will battle to be the starting right tackle after serving as a solid backup to the interior spots the past few seasons.  Eck shared that he has great position flexibility and can contribute across the offensive line.

#73 Matt Clark has been a two year starter at guard but will face competition for his spot this year.  Clark is a load who just needs to continue to take his game to the next level.  If Clark can improve his consistency from snap to snap look for him to have a big year!

#76 Joe Carbis and #78 Evan Greeneway will battle for the backup tackle positions but need to continue to improve their consistency.  Greeneway has emerged in fall camp as a solid option as the left tackle of the future.

#63 Jack Domandle is an intriguing freshman.  He was one of the top recruits in 2016 but missed the fall semester and rejoined the team for the spring.  Every indication shows that he will be ready to go if called upon at either guard or center.

#57 Caleb Lang returns to the offensive side of the ball for his senior year and brings good experience and smarts as a backup guard.

#60 Mike Dobrenski is now a redshirt freshman.  However, he may miss most of this season with a shoulder injury.  Lets hope for a good recovery so Mike can continue the pipeline of Badger state standout linemen.

The freshmen class is highly regarded and includes: #54 Eddie Miller, #56 Eagan Lickiss, #59 Austin Boen, #61 Wyatt Ewing, #65 Austin Lohsandt, #71 Aron Johnson, #72 Jason Titus, #74 Brendan Rotert, and #75 Jon Grutzmacher.  Eck said that everyone will have the chance to contribute and that they need to enter camp ready to go and compete every snap.  Whoever red shirts will need to use the year to get bigger, stronger, and faster. So far this fall, Eddie Miller has ran with the second team on the right side of the line.  Unfortunately, Boen re-injured his knee and will redshirt this season while he recovers.

Also joining the Jackrabbits is #79 Grant Schmidt, former Roosevelt standout and Ohio State signee.  Schmidt will need to sit-out one year due to transfer rules but may have three years of eligibility left pending NCAA approval.

Go Jacks!
-Matt
