Position Preview: Quarterback

After previewing the defense, we are now turning our attention to the offense.  Our first installment will focus on the quarterback room.

I had the chance to visit with Coach Eric Eidsness about his group.  Eidsness is in his seventh season at SDSU.  He had previously been the head coach at SMSU after starting his career as a Jackrabbit assistant coach.  He shared that this is the fullest the quarterback room could probably ever be.  I asked what qualities he looks for in his quarterbacks and he identified that he wants them to be able to move the ball.  That can be running or throwing and if they can do both, that puts more pressure on the defense.  He also stressed how important it is for his quarterbacks to be smart and to be learners.

#3 Taryn Christion enters his junior year as the unquestioned leader of the offense and is the reigning Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Year.  This year he was voted a captain by his teammates and will be asked to provide leadership on and off the field. Taryn had a 64% completion rate last year, with 30 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions.  Additionally, he has the ability to run as demonstrated by his 335 yards and 5 touchdowns rushing. Taryn went through a stretch where his accuracy was a little off last year but Eidsness said they worked through it.  Taryn has been working this summer to continue to develop chemistry with his other receivers.

#8 Dalton Douglas (senior), #12 Kanin Nelson (redshirt freshman), and #17 Alec Cromer (redshirt freshman) will battle it out for the backup position.  Eidsness stressed that whoever the backup is, is only one snap away from getting on the field and that they need to be ready.  Douglas has worked hard but his career as a Jackrabbit has been riddled with injuries.  Nelson served as the emergency quarterback last season and gained valuable reps in practice and in spring ball.  Cromer is coming off a significant injury that limited his participation last fall but he had a great spring and improved even more over the summer.  Whoever is the backup will need to be ready to go at a moments notice.  Taryn's dual threat nature has big play potential, but it also leaves him susceptible to big hits from time to time.

#14 Ethan Bullock enrolled early and was on campus for spring ball but will redshirt his freshman year.  #16 Justin Roberts transferred from the University of Nebraska Kearney but will redshirt this year after moving up a division.

Go Jacks!
