Position Preview: Tight Ends

Part two of our offensive preview will focus on the tight end position.  Part one focused on the quarterback room.

The tight end position has an obvious leader in first team All-American in Dallas Goedert but features unproven players after that.  Coach Luke Schleusner, in his second year with the Jacks, will be responsible for building depth behind Dallas and for coaching up the young players.

#86 Dallas Goedert returns for his senior year after a record breaking junior campaign. 92 receptions, 1293 yards, and 11 touchdowns have caught the attention of NFL teams.  Most mock drafts project him being drafted somewhere between the first and fourth round of the draft.  If the returning and preseason All-American has another monster year expect him to lean towards a first or second round pick.  Already there have been NFL scouts watching him at practice. Dallas will be a leader not just in the Tight End room but also with his teammates as he was elected as a team captain.  The former walk-on has proven that hard work and dedication in the weight room pays off.  Coach Schleusner shared that this offseason Dallas broke his own records for the bench press, squat and power clean.

#83 Kallan Hart is a 6'5 255 pound sophomore and #88 Sam Steckman is a 6'4 235 pound redshirt freshman who are back and looking to make an impact this year.  Schleusner indicated that both have worked hard this off season and will battle to be the primary backup.  Hart has recently been recognized by Offensive Coordinator Eric Eidsness as someone who has stood out in practice and has been impressive as a blocking tight end.

#85 Arthur Egan, #43 Skyler Cavanaugh, and #47 Caleb Scauf are incoming freshmen that the coaching staff are excited excited to see perform in fall camp.  Schlesuner said that all three are vertical threats in the passing game and that they are all great athletes.  Look for one of these three to play early due to the lack of depth at the Tight End position.   So far in fall camp, Cavanaugh is taking reps with the second team.  He has displayed good hands in practice and is a more than willing blocker, even if his technique still needs work.

Go Jacks!
Matt
