Rants & Raves: YSU

I woke up this morning feeling pretty good. I'm certainly not mad about the result, but I am disapointed.  This game felt and looked like the mirror image of the playoff loss to NDSU last year.  I'm sure the team will move forward and be okay, but there aren't a ton of positives to take out of this game.

Rants & Raves
Rave: Nice work on the fast start by the Jackrabbit offense.  Two possessions and two deep drives into YSU territory.  Goedert's fumble in the red-zone was unfortunate.  We have seen him break those type of tackles for scores so it is hard to fault his effort.

Rant: The Jackrabbits have been incredibly improved on 3rd down defense this season.  That is what makes the performance on Saturday frustrating.  YSU went 10-16 on 3rd down.  YSU converted through the pass and the run.  A 3rd and 13 conversion was especially frustrating.

Rave: The defensive stand at the end of the game to keep YSU from scoring was impressive.  It would have been easy for the defense to let YSU score but they stonewalled two separate attempts.  I'm wondering what YSU was trying to prove at that point?

Rant: The time of possession difference was out of control. YSU possessed the ball for over 3 quarters of the game.  The edge was 45:14 seconds for YSU to 14:46 for SDSU.  In the second half alone the Jackrabbit offense only had the ball for 3 minutes and 36 seconds.  So which unit is to blame? This is kind of like the chicken and the egg argument.  The offense couldn't sustain drives to give the defense a rest but the defense couldn't get off the field on 3rd down to help the offense find a rhythm. YSU went on drives of 94, 75, 78, and 80 yards.  The fact the Jackrabbit defense only gave up 19 points is pretty remarkable.

Rave: The pass blocking was pretty good.  I felt that YSU would likely have a few sacks in the game, but the Jackrabbit offensive line held them to zero.  YSU came in with 10 sacks.  There was some pressure on the pass attempts, especially in the second half, but in the first half Taryn had good time to throw.

Rant:  I really didn't like the delayed hand-off that yielded the safety.  This appeared to be the same play call that resulted in the safety against NDSU in the playoff loss.  The Jacks don't run anything from under center but his may be an occasion to do that.  My personal preference would be to run a quick passing play that offers some breathing room.

Rave: The Jacks only were sited for one penalty for 15 yards.  That is great!  Hopefully the Jacks continue to play clean.

Rant: I should have stuck with my initial prediction of a YSU victory.  However, after watching YSU's previous games, I was convinced that they hadn't really played a dynamic offense and that their defense was over-hyped.  I was wrong.

Rant: Let's get Adam Anderson the ball.  He was dynamic in fall camp but has not caught a pass since the first possession of the Duquesne game.  He could be a big time contributor but I'm not sure what is going on.  YSU was doing everything they could to eliminate Jake and Dallas.

Rave: I still believe in this team.  I think they still have the potential to be special.  They need to regroup.  Get in sync on offense and get off the field on 3rd down on defense.  The young players got their first taste of MVFC smash-mouth football.  Their ego's should be bruised because they were out-manned but hopefully this is a learning experience for later in the season.  Again, I believe in this team and know they can play and perform better.

Game Balls
Offense: Charlie Harmon
Harmon did a great job from his left tackle position of shutting out the rotation of defensive ends that YSU uses.  The announcers didn't say his name once during the game and that is usually a good thing for an offensive linemen.

Defense: Larenzo Williams
Zo subbed in at the safety position and made a couple of plays.  A nice jarring hit in run support and then the interception at the goal line.  He is an athletic player who should see increased reps with his performance against YSU.  He finished with 4 tackles and an interception.

Go Jacks!
