Last week's action : Alabama State and Kansas

November 20,2017

Well time for recap of the action that took place over last week. The Jack rabbits played two games that could not have been more different. First, there was a 94 to 63 rout of the Alabama State Hornets. Later that week the men’s team received a 98 to 64 drubbing from the third ranked Kanas Jayhawks.

Alabama State- 94 - 63 Jacks

Rave- Defense against Alabama State

A strong defensive effort in the first half allowed the jackrabbits to get ahead early, leading to a 12 to 1 advantage on the scoreboard in the first five minutes. The Hornets were limited to just 35 percent shooting. Overall, this was the best game the Jacks have played defensively so this season, it helped them pull away early in the game.

Rant- Sloppy Play in Final Minutes

While the Jackrabbits were almost certainly ensured victory in the second half, they appeared to let up in the final minutes. The offense began committing multiple turnovers and allowing Alabama State scoring easy baskets, allowing them to chip away at a commanding lead. A stronger team than the Hornets might have been able to make the Jacks pay for such a lapse.

Rave- Offensive Dominance

The SDSU Jackrabbits scored a whopping 94 points against Alabama State. This will probably be the highest scoring game for the season. If they maintained the pace they set for the first 35 minutes they would have passed the century mark. The Jack’s shooting percentage was 50 percent for field goals and three pointers. Junior Mike Daum was allowed to run lose for 30 points as he put up a double double. Again, freshman guard David Jenkins Junior continued to shine with adding 20 points off the bench and a four-point play at the end of the first half. Perhaps he may be a future star on this team? He has certainly impressed so far.

Kansas 98 – 64 Jayhawks

Rant- Poor Shooting

The jackrabbits came into this game being known for their shooting prowess. But against the Jayhawks defense they could not get the shots to fall. They only managed 21 percent from behind the three point line.  The Jayhawks made it difficult for the Jacks to get to their bread and butter. Kanas is a top five team after all, they were not Alabama State. Jenkins Jr. was limited to 4 of 14 shooting as he was chased continuously by the Kanas defense.

Rave- Second Half

Even though the Kansas lead after the first half was too much to overcome the Jackrabbits improved their play in the second half. Mike Daum started the second half by going making three straight three pointers from the top of the arc. Guards Howell and King showed toughness by getting the basket for layups from a taller Kanas squad by scoring seven and twelve points respectively. Kanas is a great team so none of the points the Jacks scored came easy.

Rant – Point Guard Play

The size of the Kansas defense gave the points guards tons of trouble. There were many bad turnovers during the game. Freshman guard Key struggled the Kansas trees with four turnovers. They were mismatched against Kanas defenders getting stuffed at the rim repeatedly. The season is still young, and they have time to improve, they also won’t be playing a top five team every week either.

Rave – Kansas

There is no way around it. Kanas is currently one of the best men’s basketball teams in the country and they proved why that is true. While playing with a limited roster they managed to shoot over 60 percent. It seemed that anything they put up would go through the basket. Seven-foot sophomore center Udoka Azubuike caused all sorts of problem that Jacks were unable to answer. Senior guard Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk had career high of 27 points.

Special Note

Well, that is it from last week’s action. I hope everyone enjoys a memorable and safe Thanksgiving this week as the football team enjoys their bye and the men take on Iowa tomorrow.
