Opening Weekend Wrap Up.

Weekend wrap up.

Well, there two games in the book for SDSU men’s basketball team after the opening weekend of the College basketball’s regular season. The men managed two wins over UC Irvine and the University of Mary. Here are some thought about the games over Veteran’s day weekend.

Rave- The Three

The three-point shot was especially crucial during the game with UC Irvine who dared the Jackrabbits to beat them from behind the arc. SDSU obliged them by making 14 three pointers by going 40% from three-point range and 8 three pointers for 35% against University of Mary.

Rant- Struggles in the Paint

The Jackrabbits struggled getting points in the paint against UC Irvine. They struggled early getting penetration with the point guards in the first half. A tight zone defense made it difficult for them to get to the basket and when they were able to get a shot off they were unable to finish at the basket or the ball just wouldn’t roll in. The Jacks only manages 6 points in paint not counting free throws which made the three-point shooting all the more crucial.

Rave- Second half adjustments

After the first half struggles against Anteaters zone defense the Jackrabbits responded by with more precise play from point guards Key and King. Their passes were fast and on target. They were able to get more penetration in the second half, while they didn’t get to the basket the movement opened shot for the rest of the team on the perimeter. While forward Mike Daum was quiet in the first half, he had big timely three-point shots in the second half that gave the SDSU squad much needed momentum, scoring the majority of his 12 points in the second half.

Rant-Rebounding

While the Jackrabbits enjoyed a 48 to 34 rebounding advantage against University of Mary on Sunday. They were soundly outrebounded Friday night 50 to 37 allowing to stay close with second chance opportunities. Most likely these struggles were a result of UC Irvine being a tough team that played well. Hopefully issues in the paint don’t continue for the rest of the season.

Rave- Hustle Plays

Reed Tellinghuisen (12pts) provided early offense early in first half while the rest of the offense was relatively quiet. He also showed toughness by taking not one, not two, not three, but four charges during the game. The SDSU defense was able to force 18 turnovers by the Anteaters compared to only 8 by the Jackrabbits.

David Jenkins Jr., the freshman guard, was the first man off the bench and proved a spark for the offense leading the team with 16 points. He was 50 percent for shooting beyond the arc.

Rant- Chippy Play

Towards the end of the UC Irvine games there were some fouls that bordered on flagrant by the visiting team. Later in the second half UC Irvine forward Elston Jones committed a hard foul on guard Tevin King, striking him in the eye with a closed fist. While Jones fouled out it should have been called a flagrant foul. King was unable to continue playing in the game. There was another hard, offensive foul by a UC Irvine guard as he attempted to stiff arm an SDSU defender, sending him sliding across the floor. Despite this the Jackrabbits remained calm and went on to win 65 to 54.
