Thankgiving Recap

Thanksgiving Recap

For those of us who were busy over the last week stuffing our faces with turkey and then braving the perils of black Friday (many of you) or heading out to the country for deer (myself), the SDSU men’s team played four games going 3-1 while improving to 6-2 overall. During this time the Jackrabbits got a big win over a Big 10 opponent (Iowa) and saw some changes to the starting line-up.

Wyoming 77 SDSU 65

Rave – Point Guard Play

The SDSU point guards did their part contributing to scoring. Junior Brandon Key managed ten points, the majority coming from the free throw line. Senior Chris Howell managed 8 points coming off the bench. Points from this the point guard position has been lacking early in the season, this improvement is most welcome.

Rant -  Field Goal Shooting

The Jacks managed only 37 percent shooting for field goals. They need to improve in this aspect or it might cost the team games down the road.

SDSU 80 – Iowa 72

Rave – David Jenkins Jr.

The freshman lead scoring with 23 points as the Jackrabbits defeated Big 10 team, the Iowa Hawkeyes. It always a time to celebrate whenever a smaller school can beat a team from a much bigger conference. Jenkins had impressed so far this season. Will he start eventually? Let’s see what happens.

Interesting Note – Changes to Starting Lineup

Forward Ian Theisen and guard Chris Howell made their first starts this season. From observing the games so far it appears that Theisen adds a physical presence and Howell has retaken his position in the starting lineup. This lineup would continue through the rest of the week. It will be interesting to see if this lineup continues for rest of the season.

SDSU 94 Buffalo 80

Rave – Offense

The Jackrabbits matched their season high by scoring 94 points against the Buffalo Bulls (copy right issue?). The Jackrabbits enjoyed a 46 to 24 point advantage at the end of the first half and they shot 60% percent from the field. Forward Mike Daum put up 34 points while 6th man David Jenkins Jr. followed  with 17 points from bench while playing starter level minutes. Junior Chris Howell scored 10 points continuing improving play from the point guards.

Rant – Turnovers

It hard to find something to complain about after a 94-point game, but I guess I’ll nit-pick anyway. The only category that the Jack fell behind against Buffalo was turnovers, 19 to 11.

SDSU 92 Dakota State 60

Rave – SDSU Bench

Well, a 32-point rout over our neighbors to the south is not surprising. It is fair to note that the Jackrabbit bench scored a combined 46 points. Brandon Key added a season high 13 points off of the bench. It is always great to see the entire team contribute to a win. Getting the bench involved may certainly help down the road.

What’s Next

This week the SDSU Jackrabbits go on the road to take SEC team Ole Miss on Tuesday and host Missouri State at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls this Saturday.
Also, make sure to watch the SDSU football team attempt to avenge their Hobo Day loss as they take on UNI in the second round of the FCS football playoffs.
