Men's Basketball Roundup
Time for the men’s basketball round up. During the last four
game stretch the Jackrabbits certainly had their ups a downs. They split the
four games going 2-2 improving to 8 – 4 on the season overall. The men’s team managed
to put up season highs for the first time in years and had their worst offensive
performance this season.
Rave- Knocking off
Ole Miss in overtime
For the second time this season the Jackrabbits defeated a
big conference school. Previously it was against Iowa in the Big 10 but this
time it was SEC school Ole Miss. While they are not a perennial basketball
power by any means such a victory helps raise the reputation and profile of
SDSU and the program. It was a tough even game and the Jackrabbits hung on to
edge out the Rebels 99 to 97 in overtime. The Jackrabbits were lead by the
usual suspects; Mike Daum, Reed Tellinghusen, and David Jenkins Jr scoring 26, 19,
and 22 points respectively.
Rant- Shooting
against Missouri State
This game was a letdown after the victory over Ole Miss. When
examining the number after losing to Missouri State by 20 points one statistic
stands out, three-point shooting. The Jackrabbits only managed a paltry 12.5%
from behind the arc. This hurt the team, especially when considering they are usually
averaging over 40 percent shooting a game. Overall, the Jackrabbits played
poorly offensively, usual scoring leaders Daum and Jenkins were kept under ten
points. This game just shows how important the trey is to SDSU men’s team.
Rant- Going cold down
the stretch against Wichita State
The Jackrabbit played a tough game against the 6th
ranked Wichita State Shockers but after leading for much of the game they
ultimately fell short in their upset bid against another top ten opponents. Trailing
late against the Shockers toward the end of the final and in the bonus the
Jackrabbits resorted to the tactic of sending the Shockers to the free throw
line. Normally, this strategy rarely works because teams usually make these charity
shots. But this time the Wichita States were not sinking the free throws late
in the game giving the Jackrabbits a golden opportunity to steal the win. But,
they were able to make the shots at this crucial juncture. One good say this
was a “good loss” but its hard not to think what could have been.
Rave- Dropping 100+ points in a full team effort
How to rally after dropping two consecutive games? How about
scoring 103 points against Concordia? Well, that what Jackrabbits did, passing
the century mark on the core board for the first time in many years. Everything
went their way that night and it was an all-around team effort. Six players passing
double digits in the scoring column with David Jenkins Junior leading the way
with 19 points.
