Men's Basketball Roundup
Last week the SDSU men’s team split two games. One
was a rout in favor of the Jackrabbits while the other was a double overtime
loss heart breaker. It is fair to mention that the Jackrabbits have done well
against these big school opponents as conference play draws near.
Rave- David Jenkins
Jr. as a Starter
The freshman guard has been fitting in well during his first
few games in the starting lineup. The fact that he has ended up as a starter
comes as a surprise to no one who has been following the team this season. He
contributed 31 points in a loss to the Buffaloes in Boulder, Colorado. He still
needs improve his defense but his contributions on offense are undeniable, he is
instant offense and has lots of potential.
Rant- Transition
defense
In the first half against UND, SDSU struggled to get back on
defense giving the Fighting Hawks multiple chances to score easy points. It
appeared that sloppy transition defense helped UND stay in the game for as long
as they did. A better opponent would make SDSU pay dearly for such as lapse.
Rave- Mike Daum
Forward Mike Daum shined against a Pac 12 ream team by
leading the Jackrabbits with 37 points. Perhaps without foul trouble he could
have contributed more down the stretch. But a strong performance
against a big conference school might help with a possible NBA draft in the
future.
Rant- Not being able
to finish in crunch time
Considering SDSU is considered a “mid-major” school it may
be hard to complain about losing to a Pac 12 school. But considering recent
success against teams such as Iowa and Ole Miss, the close losses against
Wichita State and Colorado could have been victories if the Jackrabbits were
able to finish strong down the stretch. This may be nit picking but the last
few years have shown that this squad can play well against big conference
talent and will have to finish late in the fourth quarter if they want to get
out of the first round of the NCAA tournament and/or get a more favorable
seeding.
Up next
The Jackrabbits host Drake on December 19th and
play UMKC on the road on December 22.
