Men’s Basketball Roundup: Summit league play begins
After weeks of non-conference play against small and large
conference schools the SDSU men’s team started their Summit league play with two
wins against the NDSU Bison and the Omaha Mavericks. The Jackrabbits are
currently in second place in the Summit league standings after extending their winning
streak to five games.
SDSU 87- NDSU 80
Rave- Mike Daum perfect from the free throw line
Despite only making one three-pointer the entire game forward
Mike Daum managed to shoot 16 for 16 from the charity stripe as he picked up
another double-double this season. In a close game that saw several lead changes
SDSU needed every single one of those baskets.
Rant- Offensive
rebounding
While the Jackrabbits held the advantage in shooting they
lost to the Bison in the rebounding department, especially in offensive rebounding where NDSU
held a 2 to 1 advantage. Allowing a team to outgain the Jack in such a category
lets the opposition gain crucial second chance point. Not something one wants
to see on defense.
SDSU 101 – Omaha 88
Rave- Free throw
shooting...again
The Jackrabbits went 18 for 20 at the free throw line as a
team. Four players, Reed Tellinghuisen, Tevin King, and Mike Duam were all
perfect. The last of the four also had a double-double for a second game in a
row. Sometimes free-throw shooting is an overlooked statistic, but they can
make a difference in a tight game, so it is reassuring to the see the team
perform well in this aspect of the game.
Rant- Title Rematch?
This game was hardly a rematch of last season Summit league championship.
The Mavericks lost many players to graduation and transfers. As a result, the
game ended in a rout that resembled a showcase game like previous games against
mismatched opponents. But why complain, a win is a win after all.
