3 Matchups to watch: KSU
This week I've attempted to learn all I can about the triple option. We don't see it often in the MVFC, I didn't play against it in high school, and I don't really watch it on TV as I tend to shy away from Georgia Tech games. It's an interesting offense that has its limits but when it clicks is very dangerous. I'm sure the defensive staff has had some long days working to prepare for this matchup..
1. Brandon Snyder vs. Chandler Burks
There are lot of methods to stopping the option but using a safety as a deeper middle linebacker appears to be one of the best and most common ways of limiting the triple options effectiveness. Snyder is great running down hill and smacking the ball carrier. If the ends are sweating the quarterback Snyder will potentially have a field day making plays in the backfield. Snyder is the exact type of player you want to have for a triple option team; fast, instinctual, and a sound tackler.
2. #605Hogs vs. KSU Front 7
The Hogs will be tested by this KSU front 7. They may not be the biggest but they are quick and slippery getting off blocks. The KSU defense is 3rd in total defense and 12th in yds/rush at 107 ypg. If the weather is bad, the Jacks will need to run the ball like they have for much of the season. It is important that they get some type of movement and wear on this KSU defensive line and linebackers throughout the game.
3. Jackrabbit CBs vs. KSU Wide Receivers
This matchup has nothing to do with passing the balls. After rewatching the Wofford vs KSU and Monmouth vs. KSU matchup, it became apparent that the KSU outside runs were most successful when the receivers eliminated the cornerback as a threat to make the tackle. The Jackrabbit corners can play physical but this game will be to a whole new level. They will need to get off their blocks and either make the play or continue to string it out until help can arrive from their teammates rallying to the ball.
BONUS 4. Jackrabbits DTs vs. KSU Interior Offensive Line
Everything starts with stopping the dive. If you can stop the dive with a normal look, then it gives you extra bodies to defend the outside. However, you have to stop the dive first.
I'm still sticking with my prediction of a 38-27 victory. This will be a challenging game because of the opponent and the weather but if feels like the Jacks have been playing in crappy weather for the last month and a half. They will be ready for it.
Go Jacks!
Matt
