Tyson Gordon Interview and Recruiting Update
Greetings Jackrabbit faithful! It has been a bit since we recapped spring ball but recruiting is in full swing. The Jackrabbits are hosting the second, and final, of their prospect camps today. There always seem to be a couple verbals after the prospect camps and I would expect the same this week.
Tyson shared that his recruitment has been going well. He's had lots of interest but has narrowed it down to SDSU and NDSU at this point. He visited Brookings June 10th with 20 to 25 other priority recruits. He had a great chance to visit with the staff, take a tour of campus, and eat dinner at Cubby's. Tyson talked about his strong relationship with Coach Jackson and Coach Bergstrom. He said he enjoys talking them when he gets the chance and he can tell there is a strong family atmosphere in Brookings that is different than other programs. He pointed out that even the new freshmen who have only been in Brookings a couple weeks are already clicking.
I asked Tyson about his thoughts on being the next great #NebraskaJack and Tyson commented on how much of a presence Coach Jackson and SDSU have established in Nebraska. He was quick to point out that Cade Johnson was an All-American last year and the strong haul that SDSU has had in the state the last few years. He joked that it's a pretty catchy phrase.
Tyson is a multiple-sport standout and plays quarterback and safety for his high school team. He shared that playing both positions helps him prepare and understand what the opposition is trying to do, both on offense and defense. Tyson said his best traits as a safety are his ball skills and tracking the ball. Tyson's goal for his senior football campaign are to repeat as state champions and go 13-0, which was their record in 2018.
Now that he has visited both programs, Tyson plans to make his decision next week. Being the athlete that he is, he has a basketball tournament this weekend that he wants to focus on but plans to sit down and really think it out next week. In closing, Tyson shared that he "just wants to win! I'm a winner and I hate losing." Sounds like the perfect Jackrabbit to me!
2020 Recruiting Update
The Jackrabbits have had a strong start to their 2020 class. There are currently 5 athletes on the books. The thing that I love about this group is the position versatility. These guys can play all over the field and wreak havoc on their opponents.
LB: Aaron Kusler, 6'2, 210lb; Sioux Falls, SD (Roosevelt)
LB: Adam Kusler, 6'2, 205lb; Sioux Falls, SD (Roosevelt)
Athlete: Daeton McGaughy, 6'1, 190lb; St. Joseph, MO (Lafayette)
Safety: Cale Reeder, 6'0, 180lb; Yorkville, IL
Athlete: Isaac Appleget, 6'2, 190lb; Lincoln, NE (Lincoln Southeast)
Go Jacks!
Matt
One of the top targets for the Jackrabbits is Tyson Gordon. The 6'2, 170 pound safety from Nebraska was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time to recap his recruitment.Brookings, SD ππ° #JACK20NTOP pic.twitter.com/rXBF07bSiP— Tyson Gordon (@TysonGordon18) June 10, 2019
